(INDIANAPOLIS)  Dave Barr, a double-amputee, and other motorcyclists will depart from the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28th on what is called The Honor Run.  The Honor Run is a coast-to-coast ride with nine city stops ending in Southern California on September 5th.  The run will pick-up riders and donations along the way to raise funds to help build a Fisher House, which provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.  This Saturday, August 29, The Honor Run will make a special stop in Indianapolis at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Grand Nationals to sign-up riders, take donations and to recognize a Lowell, Indiana family of a fallen hero that has inspired and is a major reason for The Honor Run.

The Honor Run including Dave Barr; Mike Kerr, 1st Marine Division Association and Executive Director; Rick Barker, Active member of New Zealand Parliament and former Minister of Veterans Affairs of New Zealand; John Coleman, retired “Royal New Zealand warrant officer, Vietnam Veteran and world class motorcycle racer; and others will recognize Deborah Mays and family of SSGT Don May who was killed in Iraq on March 23, 2003 serving our country.

It is through the dedication and courage of people like SSGT May that we are all able to enjoy the freedom we so often take for granted.  I met Deb May and her three children in 2006 when I brought her family and 900 other families of our fallen to Disneyland in CA.”, said Mike Kerr, Executive Director of Honor Run, “She walked up to me and handed me a Zippo lighter with the date 3/23/03 the words Semper Fi and the emblem of the Marine corps on it.  She then went on to tell me that it was a gift she had given her husband when he deployed and it was also the only personal item they found on his body when he and his tank were pulled out of the Euphrates River. I told her I could not accept such a gift and she looked me straight in the eyes and said “you don’t have a choice, I need someone to carry Don’s flame so no one will ever forget why he died doing what he did”.

Mike Kerr continues, “Indianapolis please come out and help me keep my promise to Deb May and her children and help us build a fisher house in his memory so he can continue to serve his wounded brothers and their families.”

Please join The Honor Run this Saturday, August 29th at the Lucas Oil Indy Mile and pay tribute to this heroic cause, family and enjoy great motorcycle racing.  A Honor Run booth will be on hand to sign-up riders and to collect donations during the race.  The legendary Lucas Oil Indy Mile is at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th Street, Indianapolis. Gates opens at 2:00pm with timed practice at 3:00pm, and the opening ceremonies will begin at 7:00pm.
