Donate a Toy, Lap VIR
Danville, VA (November 5, 2009) - Holiday Laps returns Friday, November 13, as VIRginia International Raceway’s annual charity fund raising event that benefits the Salvation Army in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties.
Holiday Laps allows donors who bring $25 in cash, new toys or non perishable foods to drive VIR’s famed 3.27 mile Full Course behind one of the track’s Volkswagen pace cars in sessions lasting 20-25 minutes. Speeds are controlled, but still brisk enough to be very entertaining. Holiday Laps is the opening event in the WBTM-AM and WAKG-FM annual holiday auction.
“Donations support the entire VIR area, with all the surrounding communities benefiting from the generosity of fans who participate,” said track managing partner Connie Nyholm. “We treasure the support of the region and have found that this is a great way to repay that support.”
The smiles generated by Holiday Laps begin with the first group on the track - their faces brightened by the thrill of driving the same track and seeing VIR from a new perspective. More smiles get created when the Salvation Army does their good deeds during the holidays and throughout the year.
No special equipment is needed to take part in Holiday Laps. Past years have seen everything from hot rods, luxury cars, vans, trucks and motorcycles on the track. The gates open early Friday morning and sessions continue until the last one begins around 4:00 that afternoon. Every vehicle taking part receives a custom 8×10 photo of the experience, donated by VIR’s photographers, F&S Enterprises. Raffle tickets for ‘hot laps’ in a VW pace car and a ride in one of SASCO Motorsports’ vintage race cars, driven by owner Dave Handy are on offer as well. Last year’s winners got to ride in Dave’s 1968 McLaren Can-Am car. The Pagoda Grill in the paddock will have refreshments all day.
For a double dose of holiday joy, come out and drive VIR while doing the most good for needy children in the area. To keep your donations in the VIR community, make any checks payable to the Danville, Virginia Salvation Army.
