On this date in 2005, the first flag-to-flag rain-affected MotoGP race was held at the Estoril circuit in Portugal. Honda-mounted Alex Barros beat Valentino Rossi and Max Biaggi for the victory. The race was the debut of a new set of regulations that did not allow for the stoppage of the race if rain began to fall after the race had begun. Teams instead prepared a second motorcycle in pit lane with appropriate tires for the rider to switch to if necessary. The top finishers did not make the switch at Estoril, and remained on dry tires in the intermittent rain.

Garry McCoy (AU) was born on this date in 1972. In 2000, McCoy scored three victories in the 500cc World Championship with WCM/Red Bull Yamaha. He currently rides for the Caracchi Triumph team in the World Supersport Championship, and sits fourteenth in the 2009 standings.

Haskovec continues to be a well-liked figure in American road racing and can sometimes be spotted in the AMA Pro paddock.
