Between the Races
2005

Bubba Shobert
We’ve been hanging onto this very cool interview of Don Wayne “Bubba” Shobert for a while, waiting for the right occasion to use it. We figured this between-holidays week was the perfect opportunity to get you caught up with Honda’s golden boy from the late ‘80s ...

December 21, 2005 Andrew Leisner
We’re approaching the six-month mark since Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca hosted the first USGP in 11 years. By all accounts, it was an incredible event, but things have been rather quiet out of Monterey, California, since then. We figure it’s about time the 2006 Red Bull US Grand Prix got on the radar, so we checked in with Andy Leisner, the track’s vice president of marketing, to see how plans for next year’s race were coming along. He had major some major news. Read on…

Jim Allen
More than 26 years ago, a young racer (and two-time Canadian road race champion) signed up to be a Dunlop test rider. A couple of broken ankles later, he moved into the company’s technical office to work on tire design. By the mid-’80s, his position dealt solely with road racing, and today Jim Allen is Dunlop’s senior road race manager....

December 7, 2005 Ozzie Saez
As this is posted, a group of young American riders and their families and friends are on an airplane, winging their way to Spain for the MiniGP World Festival. The annual event, which is held at the Ricardo Tormo Circuito de la Cominitat Valenciana, is the biggest mini road racing competition on the planet, and it's a great chance for some of our youngest road racers to show their stuff against the world's best on small-but-serious Metrakit motorcycles. Metrakit USA's Ozzie Saez, who we first interviewed last February right here, heads up the American effort on Monday.

Kerry Graeber
It may be the off-season, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to talk about with the AMA. The sanctioning body recently announced some big news regarding the 2005 AMA Superbike season, so we figured we’d check in with AMA Pro Racing Vice President, Director of Communications Kerry Graeber for the details.

November 23, 2005 Liam Shubert
Most of the people we feature in this space have jobs in the motorcycle industry. Technically, Liam Shubert doesn’t, but he’s doing his best to rectify that fact. Enamored with the MotoGP circuit, the Hawaiian native has sold his belongings and moved to Spain in order to spend the off-season searching for work with a race team. From what we’ve seen the guy’s too tenacious to bet against.

Kawasaki's Mike Preston
The average race fan will never know Kawasaki Road Race Manager Mike Preston’s face—a fact he doesn’t seem to mind.... Busier than ever behind the scenes, Preston heads up the factory green team, which delighted road race fans with the recent announcement that the squad will return to Superbike racing for 2006. When we heard that the Haydens had traveled to Japan to try out the new ZX-10s, we had to give Preston a call....

November 9, 2005 Kenny Roberts
We spoke on the phone yesterday with KR Roberts team owner Kenny Roberts for a project we’re working on, and when we were finished, we asked him if he had any news on his team’s plans for 2006. To our surprise, he said that the Honda engine deal was definitely a go. He also added that not only would he be campaigning the 2006 season (most likely with son Kenny Jr. as the rider), but that he’d be ready for the Malaysia test in November. If having both Kennys Roberts together and armed with Honda power isn’t a reason for American fans of road racing to be happy, we don’t know what is ...

Al Ludington
Last week’s “Tuesday Conversation” was with 2005 Formula Xtreme Champion Miguel Duhamel; in this week’s “Between the Races,” we check in with his trusty crew chief, Honda’s Al Ludington. The duo has been a successful team for almost 15 years (routinely striking fear into the heart of any rider or mechanic with their eye on a class title) ...

October 26, 2005 Gavin Trippe
Two weekends ago, Gavin Trippe was among the nine people named into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame (Scott Russell was another one). For those who aren’t aware, Trippe is a motorcycle-racing promoter extraordinaire. He invented the genre of Supermoto with his made-for-TV Superbikers events at Southern California’s Carlsbad Raceway, and he was involved in the promotion of the Motocross Grand Prix at the same track, the Transatlantic Match Races, Laguna Seca road races, and other important events. We called him
last week ...

Larry Treible
We usually dedicate Between the Races to industry folks, but it’s really open to anyone who’s not a famous racer, so we figured we’d dial up the winner of the latest
Road Racer X subscription contest for this week’s installment. We spoke with Livermore, California’s Larry Treible on Thursday, a few hours after Julie Kramer had informed him that he was the winner of our Hotbodies Racing Honda contest, and that he’d soon be receiving a Hotbodies Racing Honda CBR600RR, as well as Larry Pegram-replica Joe Rocket leathers and Shoei helmet.

Chuck Aksland
Team Roberts has been in the news a lot lately, first when KTM pulled out of their engine-supply role for the team during the summer break, and then when rumor surfaced that Roberts was in discussions with Honda to fill that role as early as next season ...

October 5, 2005 Geoffrey Lambert
Motorcycle racers can often be found at the track on Sundays, but thanks to folks like Geoffrey Lambert, that fact doesn’t necessarily condemn them to eternal damnation. As a chaplain with Team Riders For Christ, Lambert gives religious racers the possibility to take part in a ritual even when they’re away from church. We asked Geoffrey to give us the lowdown on what exactly
he does ...
September 15, 2005 Team Sheriff
Hardcore road racers already know that racing on the street is silly, dangerous, and—compared to riding on tracks—unnecessarily dangerous. However, that’s not always clear to folks who have never tasted the pleasures of the track-day experience, and those people may be tempted to take chances on the street. L.A. Sheriff Mike Churney is doing his best to spread the word, using a cool cop-themed Honda CBR to catch attention and then sneaking in some education.
